The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes - Volume Three: Iron Man Unleashed! DVD Release Review
By James Harvey

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) brings six more episodes of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes to single-disc DVD release and, much like the animated program itself, there's little to complain about. The first of two single-disc releases collecting the second half of the show's first season, fans should know what to expect here based off the previous DVD releases. Packaging is a standard Amaray case tucked snugly in a foil-embossed cardboard slipcase. Looks sharp and will be hard to miss on shelves.

Digging in, WDSHE has once again provided what I find to be a satisfying release. In terms of audio and video, you really can't ask for better here (well, maybe Blu-ray...). The widescreen transfer on all included episodes is pretty spectacular and near flawless. Yes, there's some slight compression and noticeable aliasing, but you won't see it unless you're looking for it. The colors are bright and vibrant, the blacks are solid, and everything appears smooth. This is a seriously high-quality transfer, something that seems to becoming a rarity on DVD thanks to Blu-ray. This show will look stunning on your TV and, thankfully, it'll sound just as excellent. The English Dolby Digital 5.1 track is crystal clear and, at times, just thunderous. Action scenes pop and work all the channels, with quieter scenes sounding just as crisp. This title definitely deserves to be played loud!

Extras are slim but still enjoyable. Outside of the standard collection of trailers, including a trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger and the rather cool looking Tron Uprising cartoon coming to Disney XD, bonus content consists of a simple trivia track. That's all. The trivia is as basic as possible and offers nothing new. I'm sure even the newest of fans would roll their eyes at the incredible simplistic track. Disappointing after the great extras from the first two volumes.

My only real gripe here, well...after the very weak bonus content...is that I wish this WDSHE released a two-disc containing the last thirteen episodes set as opposed to two single-disc volume releases. I really don't mind, since this title follows the previous wave of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes DVDs that WDSHE released earlier in the year, but I do worry that fans will just dismiss these DVDs. More episodes would be key, but I still urge fans to support these titles so we can keep seeing episodes released down the line. A fourth volume was released alongside a this single-disc DVD collection of with the final seven episodes from the first season of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, so be sure to get the matching set!

Basically, if you picked up the first The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes DVD releases, then you need this one (and the fourth release!). It's a nice collection of episodes with a small smattering of bonus content at least worth a go through or two. But the main draw are the episodes and, boy, this show really upped its game in these final 13 episodes, the first six of which are located right here. These are some truly amazing adventures worth watching, and are very accessible to young viewers, casual fans, or the die-hard followers! Toss in some excellent audio/video quality and this release is a must have for fans. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes - Volume Three: Iron Man Unleashed! is not to be missed!
