Episode #3: Doomsday

When Reed is accused of having purposefully exposed Susan, Johnny and
Ben to the cosmic rays that transformed them into the Fantastic Four, the team is torn apart. But as Susan, Johnny and
Ben individually wonder if Reed is capable of such a betrayal, they’re attacked by the mastermind behind the plot against
Reed – Doctor Doom. Now the team has to escape Doom’s prisons in order to save Reed and prevent Doom from plunging the
city into the Negative Zone.

Fantastic Four continues to pick up steam with its third episode, once again proving to be much better than the previous weeks episode. Cartoon Network’s insipid episode order may be ruining the show for many but I’m finding very little else to complain about in this show.
It’s clearly obvious that this episode was intended to be the premiere as we get the basic character introductions here and the four aren’t sure what the Doombots are, despite the fact that they were fighting them in the previous episode. The team’s flashback is shown and interestingly, Doom is with them on the spaceship, just like he was in the movie and the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic book. It is a little jarring to see Doom two episodes in a row, but I’m pretty happy with how well he’s come across so far – Doom is one of those characters who is usually either absolutely awesome or just a tired cliché, and this series seems to have crated a very interesting version of him.
Doom’s design will take a little getting used to, but I’m loving those shots through his mask. I know a lot of people are iffy on the visuals of this show, but I think it’s a really unique looking cartoon – I plead ignorance to most anime and even a lot of the current Saturday morning line up is foreign to me, but I suppose that’s because I’m old school in my animation tastes – I sat through 76 episodes of AKOM’s efforts on X-Men, which has given me thicker skin than most would care to own – animation has to be really, really bad for me to hate it. Even the common complaint of CG in 2D cartoons bares little effect on me – I actually think H.E.R.B.I.E looks fantastic in this show. I know a lot of people will complain that this show isn’t Justice League Unlimited, but I think it’s been great fun so far and tone wise, the FF are worlds apart from the JLU.
Going back to Doom, I really like his voice actor too – Paul Dobson really seems to be fitting into the role perfectly. The casting overall has pretty stellar stuff – I’ve warmed up to everyone very quickly, which is especially impressive as I loved the old Marvel Action Hour Fantastic Four cast.
Overall, the show impresses me so far. The more recent cartoons I’ve come to love have started off slowly. Justice League took an entire season to become interesting, The Batman also took an entire season to become worth getting up early for and X-Men: Evolution didn’t start kicking ass until the last few episodes of it’s sophomore season. The future is looking bright for this show – I just hope the silly airdates and the fan nitpicking don’t put people off and leave them missing all the fun!
