Episode #16 - Fun With Lasers Original Airdate - September 4th, 2009 The Living Laser is back and more dangerous than ever. He’s increased his power, taken control of a space station, and has the world in his grasp. So he demands that Iron Man come fight him. Iron Man fully intends to do so, until he’s stopped by Nick Fury and Shield, an international military operation. But Iron Man isn’t sure who’s more dangerous because even if the Laser doesn’t take Iron Man out, Nick Fury just might. Story Editor Christopher Yost Written By Thomas Barichella Directed By Stephane Juffe and Phillipe Guyenne Review by Arsenal Review: “Fun with Lasers” has a lot going for it. Tony has an internal conflict over whether he wants to be an inventor or a superhero and a high-powered rematch with the Living Laser. The creators of this episode do a good job of elevating the Laser’s status. Instead of being a nameless goon who lucks into superpowers, he becomes the world’s most-powerful, self-defeating loser. He takes the world hostage and can’t come up with a single demand. That’s good stuff. Unfortunately, “Fun with Lasers” also has Nick Fury. This version of Fury is all sound and bluster without any thought behind it. He seems to act by the Idiot Code, meaning he could solve his problem in about six minutes if he were not acting like an idiot. That’s lazy work and a waste of an otherwise useful character. Fury suffocates every scene he is in with his stupidity, which is too bad, because the stuff without him is good. A scene with Tony trapped in space is the most suspenseful of the series thus far. But the excitement dissipates the moment Fury appears again on the small screen.
Too bad, really.
