The Silver Samurai was the leader of a gang of thugs who brutalised small Japanese towns into offering him tribute. When a small town didn’t have enough resources to pay their tribute, he burnt their temple down to send a message to other towns.
As Wolverine was staying in their town and helping the villagers with their temple, he left his peaceful ways behind and beat Silver Samurai and his gang, demanding they leave the villages alone. The Samurai, defeated, left as a disgrace, never to be seen again.
