The Phalanx Convient, Parts One And Two
Review And Media by Stu

67. The Phalanx Covenant, Part One
Original Airdate – September 7th, 1996
Rushing to investigate a disturbance downtown, the X-Men find Sabretooth on the rampage again, but realize too late that it isn't really Sabretooth at all. It is the Phalanx, a voracious alien life-form that can assume the guise of anything or anyone. Before long, the X-Men are all captured, except for Beast, who must find a way to stop the alien horror from devouring the entire Earth.

68. The Phalanx Covenant, Part Two
Original Airdate – September 7th, 1996
The X-Men continue their battle with the Phalanx, a race of techno-organic aliens, while Warlock, Beast, Forge and Mr. Sinister try to put their minds together to find a way to defeat the aliens. Meanwhile, Magneto realizes that this might be his chance to see humanity fall and mutantkind to rule the earth.

Review: Another weird X-Men sees enemies become allies as the whole world is taken over by a supposedly unstoppable alien entity known only as The Phalanx. I like these episodes, if only for the “hero” team that consists of just as many villains as it did heroes. I thought bringing in Mr. Sinister was a masterstroke, especially when he was forced to team with Magneto in part two.

The main X-Man to get the spotlight is Beast, which is fantastic in itself, ol’ Mr. McCoy rarely got to be the star of the show, which was a great shame as, Wolverine aside, he was easily the most interesting X-Man. I was especially shocked to see just how quickly it managed to take over the X-Men, it seems that we were only a few minutes in and only Beast was left! It was also pretty shocking to see Mr. Sinister pleading to Professor Xavier for help!

Once again, it was simply awesome to see Magneto once again. He came this close to stealing the show. I loved how the writer portrayed him to be grief stricken over the loss of Asteroid M, in essence, his dream world. I thought it was particularly deep that he really didn’t give a damn until he learned that Quicksilver had already been taken.

The final moments had a great ‘finale’ feel to them, with Xavier and Magneto once again teaming up in hopes of a better tomorrow (or the rest of today, but whatever!) The Phalanx episodes stand as one of the more unique stories, with some great mixed match ups and some great moments for Beast.
